City Symphony films

by Kate Fortmueller

As Erik Barnouw points out in his discussion of Walther Ruttman in Documentary - A History of the Non-Fiction Film, the city symphony film was a well-known genre of documentary in the 1920s. Strand and Sheeler's film is one of the precursors to what would become increasingly popular after Ruttman's Berlin: Symphony of the City (1927). This is not a narrative film, but rather a portrait of New York.
