Lumiére & Company

by Kate Fortmueller

In 1995 (in celebration of cinema's centennial), forty filmmakers participated in the Lumiére & Company project. The filmmakers were given a series of constraints (similar to the constraints for the Lumiére/Edison assignment in CTCS 200). The filmmakers had to use the Lumiéres' Cinématographe camera and do all of their editing in-camera. In addition to their technological restrictions they had three constraints: 1) Shorts could be no longer than 52 seconds 2) No synchronized sound 3) No more than three takes Unlike Spike Lee's interpretation of the Lumiére films, Zhang Yimou's contribution is staged. Consider Yimou's contribution in relationship to many of the Lumiére films shot by Alexandre Promio.
