David Lynch and the Lumière Project

by Kate Fortmueller

In 1995 (in celebration of cinema's centennial), forty filmmakers participated in the Lumière & Company project. The filmmakers were given a series of constraints (similar to the constraints for the Lumiére/Edison assignment in CTCS 200).

The filmmakers had to use the Lumières' Cinématographe camera and do all of their editing in-camera. In addition to their technological restrictions they had three constraints:

1) Shorts could be no longer than 52 seconds

2) No synchronized sound

3) No more than three takes
