Editing and early narrative

by Kate Fortmueller

Edwin Porter's Life of an American Fireman is an example of an early narrative film. This film has numerous shots and locations/sets, but rather than allowing the viewer to experience chronologically, the film repeats the rescue sequence. In this clip the rescue is shown from two different vantage points - inside the house and outside of the house.
