Camera Movement and Camera Limitations
by Kate FortmuellerThe Lumière Bros. and Edison films had moving subjects, but limited camera movement. In this film they are able to move the camera by placing it on a moving train. The size/portability of their cameras were some of the constraints for these early films. In your first assignment for CTCS 200 we are asking you to think about the technological constraints of your own filmmaking device (cell phone, iPad, etc.). How do your constraints differ? What do cell phone cameras do well? What do they do poorly? Are there ways to transcend the constraints (like what the Lumière Bros. do in this film)?
