Skirt gagsby Kate Fortmueller
Several popular films from the early 1900s trade on the humor of women behaving in unexpected ways or finding themselves in undignified situations. How a French Nobleman Got a Wife Through the New York Herald Personal Columns (1904) provides one example of this (the attraction in this film is of women struggling with their skirts as they run through the woods). In this film, the two "women" end up helpless and nailed to a fence.
Ladies Skirts Nailed to a Fence (c.1900)
