Women, Public Space, and Leisure activities

by Kate Fortmueller

It (1927) is known for embodying the flapper sensibility and is part of the reason that Clara Bow was strongly associated with this new type of woman. Betty Lou is a young woman that works in a department store and has her own cutting edge sense of fashion. Rather than going to a fancy dinner with her date she suggests that they go to an amusement park. Both the amusement park and the department store were new and important places at the beginning of the 20th century and represent new ways to consume (and for women, new places to go).
