Self-reflexive numbers and abstraction

by Kate Fortmueller

This final number from Dames, choreographed by Busby Berkeley, has all of the characteristic elements of a Berkeley number. It begins on a stage, but quickly moves into larger and more abstract space. While many of the numbers in his films start out on a theme before becoming more abstract, this number explicitly addresses what all of the numbers are truly about: women's bodies.

Dames (1934) - "Dames"

Jimmy (Dick Powell) sings about why people go to the movies in this musical number.
