Rosebud and dialogue in Citizen Kane

by Kate Fortmueller

Of the three elements of the soundtrack (speech, music, and sound effects), speech, or dialogue is perhaps the one that viewers notice the most. Speech conveys crucial information about plot and the emotional content of the scene, however, in Citizen Kane, it conveys particularly important meaning. The central quest of the film is spurred by an utterance ("Rosebud") although there is no visual evidence that anybody hears this within the diegesis - yet everyone seems to know about.

Citizen Kane (1941) - Opening ("Rosebud")
