Impressionism in Blancanieves (2012)

by Kate Fortmueller

The term "Impressionism" encompasses a wide variety of films and techniques. Impressionism might be visible in the subjective images, temporal structure, mood, point of view, editing, lighting, cinematography, etc. This sequence from Blancanieves demonstrates an impressionist impulse. In this sequence, young Carmen practices her bullfighting technique (presumably thinking about afternoons with her father) as she hangs laundry. Her face is eventually obscured by the flowing laundry and when she emerges into view she is an adult - still practicing her bullfighting technique. This sequence has a lyrical quality that not only condenses the passage of time, but also reveals her interior life through simple gestures.
