Silent filmmaking and movement

by Kate Fortmueller

As CTCS 200 students watch more silent films throughout the semester, one of the things worth noting is the rhythmic nature of the visuals in silent films. This sequence of Carmen and her father is perfectly choreographed to the music in a fashion that is quite different from silent films. However, the focus on movement (not just dancing, but movement) reflects the kinetic quality of many silent films.
