Annabelle Butterfly Dance

by Kate Fortmueller

Many of Edison's films, such as this one, featured stars from the stage. Annabelle Whitford was an American dancer that was a member of the Ziegfeld Follies. Her films were reportedly very popular. Consider this film in relation to some of Edison's other female subjects, such as Carmencita (1894). How does this film position Annabelle Whitford as object of the gaze? How does the later film Annabelle Serpentine Dance (1895) differ from this film? Consider the framing, but also her performance in each film.
