Self-depricating Hollywood

by Kate Fortmueller

During the 2015 Golden Globes, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made a joke about George Clooney’s credentials for the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award by pitting his wife's credentials against his. This joke, which juxtaposes the work of an actor with socially valuable work, played well with the crowd. It also speaks to a longer history of self-depricating jokes present in Hollywood films. For example, how is the humor contained in this joke similar to that of Sullivan’s Travels (1941)?
