Product Differentiation

by James Tierney

In the following scene from Season 1 Episode 1, Don Draper is selling his advertising services to the cigarette brand Lucky Strike. The government had just made it illegal to advertise cigarettes and health and Don reminds the clients that now everyone is in the same boat. They are "identical companies" selling "identical products". So what is going to set them apart? What will help them differentiate their product? Advertising. This is a good clip to show to students when discussing monopolistic competition and product differentiation, oligopolies, and advertising.
