Nudge in "Armed and Dangerous"

by Charity-Joy Acchiardo

In a clip from the 1986 comedy feature “Armed and Dangerous”, a group of new security company recruits are introduced to their union representatives. The representatives explain the fees which go towards the employees’ pensions when, much to their surprise, one employee (Norman) asks several questions about the fees and the form. Norman is told to “just shut up and sign the f** form”. The clip presents a scenario where employees are nudged into a choice (paying for a pension) by being opted into a default option. Such mechanisms are meant to encourage better choices while still allowing the freedom of choice. In practice, it is rare that individuals opt out of the default and question the status quo – hence the comedic nature of this clip.
