Computer voyeurism in Demon Seed

by Critical Commons Manager

Exhibiting almost identical voyeuristic tendencies as the supercomputer Colossus in Colossus: The Forbin Project, released seven years earlier, Proteus IV, the computer in Demon Seed takes over its creator's home and begins watching its occupants. The computer's use of visual surveillance correlates with its tracking of the physical movements of the home's occupants. In the late 1970s, post-Watergate era, numerous similar instances of hybrid surveillance appeared in popular culture, marking a transition between audio-visual surveillance and data surveillance.
