Quit Whining Lynch!

Filmmakers should learn to embrace mobile devices and their promising possibilities.

Watching this clip of David Lynch ridiculing mobile devices reminded me of Howard Rheingold's optimistic article titled, "Mobile and Open: A Manifesto".  Rheingold is staying positive in supporting the push for mobile devices (such as the iPhones) to be open and user-driven, where the users are not only just consumers.  I agree with the article because when corporations and governments put restrictions on mobile devices, this only hurts the advancement of said technology.

For instance, if David Lynch had his way, he would put a restriction on all mobile devices to NOT be able to play movies.  He would be happy since people would be forced to see movies on a large screen where the filmmaker intended the movie to be screened.  I would argue that since there ARE people who watch movies on their mobile devices, this in turn makes filmmakers more aware and really think about where the screening outlet is going to be for their movies.  If for instance you are expecting theatrical release, you would frame wider shots to exploit the vastness of the theater screen.  If your goal is to screen on mobile devices, then you would definitely have a different plan and shoot more close-ups to better suit the tiny screen.

Giving power to the users and making them a part of the advancement of mobile technology only advances the technology.  Remember Pan and Scan technology.  It won't be long (if it doesn't already exist) before someone develops a Pan and Scan technology for adapting movies to be more pleasurable to watch on tiny mobile device screens.  So in short, Quit Whining Lynch and embrace these mobile devices and their promising possibilities.

David Lynch speaks out against watching movies on portable devices

This video was ripped from the DVD special features of a David Lynch movie and cleverly transformed into a parody of an Apple iPhone ad.
