Politics, Nostalgia, and Kevin's First Kiss
by How to Watch Television `

In the final scene from the pilot of The Wonder Years, Kevin finds Winnie and attempts to comfort her after news of her brother's death in Vietnam. The voiceover narration of grown-up Kevin conflates his first kiss with the politics of the sixties and recuperates ordinary life in the suburbs as full of drama. Daniel Marcus, in his essay in How to Watch Television, analyzes how the series serves as an example of television as a site of social memory, in this case creating both nostalgia for and political commentary about the 1960s.
