Family Guy's Equalizing References

by How to Watch Television

This opening scene from Family Guy illustrates its typical approach to comedy: numerous quick references that transform history into an endless source of comedy. Here the fifties are recreated via Marilyn Monroe, James Dean's corpse, and police dogs and fire-hoses trained on family friend Cleveland. Nick Marx describes how this approach caters to the tastes of TV's prized youth demographic, but compromises its satiric potential in his essay in How to Watch Television.
