As Beth realized, the cost of living differs among cities and states. Differences in income, sales tax, property tax, and other taxes contribute to these cost of living differences. The attractiveness of the business environment, regulation, and the level of government services also contribute to cost of living differences.

Beth has received two job offers and is trying to decide which to take. One is in Massachusetts, and one is in Texas. She and a friend compare the salaries, taxes and the cost of living in each place, etc. There clearly is competition in government.
