The Body Is Revolting, by Lim

by Francesca Coppa

This is a vid made by lim for the 2008 Artword "Illustrative Typography" challenge. The vid has been taken down multiple times despite being a clear example of fair use in both its stunning visuals and editing of the music, which has been used to tell a much more specific story about John Sheppard from Stargate Atlantis (SGA). The now-defunct Artword community (you can read about it on Fanlore at https://fanlore.org/wiki/Artword) was in many ways typical of SGA fandom's particular commitment to visual creativity as well as fanfiction, and it created many opportunities for multimedia work. The vid is clearly not "derivative"; in fact, it remakes the pedestrian footage of SGA into genuinely stunning visual art that is meant to visually accompany a story about Sheppard's childhood in the 1980s; consequently, the footage is made both to evoke Sheppard's memories and to evoke the color and style of the 1980s themselves. The music - which is mentioned in accompanying story as 1980s music of Sheppard's childhood - has been cut to its most story-relevant and evocative parts; literally, Sheppard, who is now living in outer space, has a "ticket to the moon," though Lim also capitalizes on the song's evocation of loneliness and isolation, which are both part of fanon Sheppard's characterization. It's ridiculous that no commercial platform's algorithm can recognize the obvious originality of this work.
