Being in Flow

by ebreilly

Psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, presented the theory of flow as being in the optimum state of happiness through fully immersing oneself in an experience. This state of flow supports intrinsic motivation where we participate out of curiosity and because we care about what we are doing, rather than being motivated by extrinsic means such as grades or rewards. Being in flow describes a moment where our minds shut down, and, as players in the game, we learn to trust what we have learned with our bodies.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: Flow, the secret to happiness

Mihaly Czikszentmihalyi TED talk video where he asks, "What makes a life worth living?" Noting that money cannot make us happy, he looks to those who find pleasure and lasting satisfaction in activities that bring about a state of "flow." This video is used in Flows of Reading to introduce Mihaly's theory on flow to gaming and then its relation to reading as another medium we can be in flow with as well.
