Juxtaposition of Andy Serkis and Gollum

by ebreilly

Actor Andy Serkis in a motion capture suit is juxtaposed in this video against the fully rendered animated character Gollum, from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002). A narrative text, be it a movie, a book, or a play, has a sense of temporal flow. Even if it is not obvious, readers are able to fill in a sense of time, and connect events, just to make sense. Not only do we as readers or movie-watchers connect dots, relate milestones and place notions and images side-by-side--i.e., we juxtapose--but we also notice what is missing, what has been unsaid.; that is we attend to gaps and silences. Engaging with the text on this structural level allows readers to experience it not as a fixed object but as a fluid space where they may engage with it in a creative and meaningful way.
