The visually meticulous introduction of The Sampler character in Shane Carruth's "Upstream Color," as he records sounds and mails the tapes for unclear reasons, raises far more questions than it answers. The film opts for visual poetry and delayed gratification over immediate narrative clarity, as the audience is forced to take in all the experiential elements of the film before all the narrative pieces come together in such a way that we understand exactly what is happening. As one can observe within the diegesis of this passage, sound effects play a pivotal role in the film.
