When an inventor (Guy Pearce) unlocks the secret to time travel on "The Time Machine," the effect of traveling through time—time passing—is visually rendered through a combination of visual effects and the simulation of time-lapse photography. Even in a futuristic science-fiction film where time theoretically becomes malleable, the stylistic tropes of time passing remain the same.
