Nary a word is spoken in the opening 15 minutes of Jean-Pierre Melville's "Le Samouraiï," which introduce us to hitman Jef Costello (Alain Delon): his life, his work, his lover. We learn about him through a highly pictorial rendering of his present, rather than an exposition-heavy, dialogue-laden explanation of his past. Delon's performance is rather stoic; instead, the visual information lies in the gestures (for example, the close-up of his hand and the keychain).
