Representing Students: Junior
by Curtis Marez `

Unable to secure federal funding for his fertility research, Dr. Hesse (Arnold Schwarzenegger), from the fictional “Leland University” (represented by UC Berkeley), implant’s himself with a colleague’s egg. In this scene, set in a lab in the Life Sciences Building, Hesse discusses the early symptoms of his pregnancy with his colleague, Prof. Arbogast (Danny DeVeto), as two graduate student researchers overhear. Here and elsewhere, the research lab stands in for the university as such, and students play relatively minor roles, serving as a sort of background that brings into relief  the main characters, a trio of research professors. What does the clip say about the university the film imagines and the place of students in it? How does it compare to other clips from Junior or representations of students more broadly?
