Murder by computer in 2001

by Critical Commons Manager

This scene of cold-blooded murder by an artificial intelligence computer in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey takes place in near silence, with only the beeping of the life support warning system to mark the deaths of four astronauts. The HAL 9000 computer who commits the murders has previously been an entirely sympathetic and endearing artificial intelligence, programmed to relate to its crew (and by extension cinema audiences) in ways that feel natural and human-like. After the murder takes place and the computer implacably attempts to allow the final crew member to die, computer and astronaut switch roles as HAL is wordlessly and implacably disconnected.
