The technologies of cinematic narrative exposed

by Critical Commons Manager

This climactic sequence from The Cabin in the Woods elevates this medium-budget teen genre movie to levels of unexpected brilliance as the narrative mechanisms for creating genre movies is exposed via the apparatus of cinema (elaborate, technologized narrative engines and detached human functionaries) that make them possible. The film makes use of multi-leveled, postmodern self awareness throughout, simultaneously reducing characters to "types" (the fool, the virgin, the scholar, etc.) and allowing them to surpass their prescribed limits, which ultimately results in the film's protagonists consciously choosing total destruction of the earth over self-sacrifice, possibly a first in Hollywood history.

The recombination of generic elements in Hollywood narratives is rarely exposed with such blunt self-awareness as in this climactic scene from Cabin in the Woods
