The rights of robots

by Critical Commons Manager

The sequel Short Circuit 2 superficially pursues questions about the rights of sentient artificial intelligence agents through a series of comic predicaments in which the robot is treated with indifference by human authority figures. This line of narrative is resolved summarily by granting American citizenship to the robot known as Johnny 5, alongside one of his creators, a South Asian ethnic stereotype played by Fisher Stevens. This narrative conceit anticipates anxieties about the rights of androids developed further in the Star Trek TNG episode The Measure of a Man (1989).
