Power and performance in She Done Him Wrong

by Critical Commons Manager

Unlike the nightclub performance scenes in Gilda and Dance, Girl, Dance, the provocative sexuality of Mae West in She Done Him Wrong goes uncontained at its conclusion. A longer view of West's overt and controversial sexuality, however, might conclude that her nearly single-handed provocation of conservative social groups, especially the Catholic Legion of Decency, led to industry-wide measures to contain such behavior by means of the Motion Picture Production Code, which began to be rigorously enforced shortly after this film was released.
