Computer hacker stereotypes in Jurassic Park

by Critical Commons Manager

Wayne Knight, the oafish but loveable character actor who played Newman on Seinfeld, reprises his role as a person of low moral standards and narrative disruption in Jurassic Park. Knight, whose character name is Dennis Nedry, an anagram for "nerdy," embodies numerous stereotypes of the Hollywood imaginary regarding computer hackers as egotistical, overweight, sexually repressed, amoral, self-serving cretins. He is contraposed with Samuel L. Jackson's technocratic, chain-smoking systems administrator who is competent but unable to repair the sabotage done by Knight, declaring "God damn it...I hate this hacker crap!" The eventual payoff of this conflict comes near the end of the film when a little girl figures out how to reboot the system and reactivate the island's security systems.
