A UNIX graphical user interface in Jurassic Park

by Critical Commons Manager

In the climactic sequence of Jurassic Park, a spunky preteen manages to reboot and control a malfunctioning UNIX operating system where professional systems administrators had failed. Under the watchful eye of Manhattan Project physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, a cinema-friendly graphical user interface allows for spatial navigation of "two million lines" of UNIX code controlling the security and communications systems in this ill-fated, prehistoric themed amusement park. The girl's unexpected and unexplained facility with computer operating systems is generationally attributable to the ideology of the digital native, who has grown up in an always already digital world and is readily able to control technology of any kind.
