On evil supercomputers and programmers

by Critical Commons Manager

White lab-coated university computer scientists on network television are almost universally coded as aloof, arrogant or evil, as in this episode from the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries from 1978 titled, "Campus Terror." The supercomputer that generates the "terror" on "campus" in this case is a badly outdated IBM AN/FSQ-7, known as the ROCK 9000, a thinly veiled homage to Kubrick's HAL 9000. The ROCK 9000 features human-like voice synthesis capabilities that allow it to place threatening phone calls on behalf of its evil programmer.
