Hand waves and color wheels as alien interface

by Critical Commons Manager

The sci-fi aesthetics of 1950s Hollywood borrowed elements of real world computing and communication technologies, coupled with some remarkably prescient fictional conceits such as gestural interfaces, which showed up in numerous films from this era, including This Island Earth, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Forbidden Planet. The hand wave used in each of these films to activate electrical devices predated the first public restroom motion activated paper towel dispenser by more than 50 years.
