Envisioning the interface

by Critical Commons Manager

This compilation video essay charts a rough breakdown of cinematic and televisual depictions of computer interfaces. Surveying dozens of American feature films and network television shows dating back to the early 1950s. This quasi-historical overview shows the shift from early gestural interfaces of the 1950s when advanced technology was linked to alien intelligence, to literal, physical and punch-card interfaces of the mainframe era, to the familiar recalcitrannce of voice and anthropomorphic interfaces. This collection comes full circle with a return to gestural interfaces and non-screen-based displays.
