Actors respond to film cuts

by Critical Commons Manager

The lines between production and post-production are comically blurred in this sequence from the beginning of Zbig Rybczynski's Steps, a parody of Eisenstein's famed Odessa Steps sequence from Battleship Potemkin. Of particular note in this sequence is the practice of having all the actors on screen respond physically to each cut in the film they are being superimposed on. This self-reflexive gesture highlights the artificiality of cinematic conventions such as montage and continuity editing.
