World building in Labyrinth

by Critical Commons Manager

The remarkable, largely pre-digital production design of Jim Henson's Labyrinth precedes the industry's computer generated world building frenzy of the digital age. Created in 1986, Henson's fantasy world shows both the potentials and limitations of hybrid practical and digital effects. By the time this gravity-defying showcase F/X sequence marks the story's narrative climax, viewers had either accepted or rejected the practical effects, puppets and prosthetics that defined the alternate universe of Labyrinth, making this composited scene even more striking.
