Virtually contiguous spaces in New Book

by Critical Commons Manager

Like his earlier work Tango, Zbig Rybczynski's New Book celebrates the ambiguity of cinematic time and space. In New Book, narrative space is artificially constructed through on-screen juxtapositions of scenes that are geographically unrelated to each other. This tactic, which is common practice in narrative cinema, ordinarily helps suture viewers into the narrative diegesis but in New Book it serves to highlight the artificiality of the narrative space.
