Korngold SEA WOLF (1941) Main Theme

by Brett Service

Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Main Theme for THE SEA WOLF (1941) introduces thematic musical elements that will be continued throughout the film, while also providing expectations for genre and setting. The title sequence text, superimposed over an image of the ship on which most of the film will take place, transitions to the foggy environs of San Francisco in 1900, where George Leach (John Garfield) attempts to evade the police. Korngold's music reinforces the menacing atmosphere that defines the initiation of the film's plot.
