Irma Vep (1996): Layers of Reflexivity

by Brett Service

In this sequence from "Irma Vep" (1996), we witness an unfolding take on set as director Rene Vidal (Jean-Pierre Leaud) attempts to remake the silent film serial, "Les Vampires". With a sudden shift to black-and-white film stock, we see the sequence unfold as the dailies as the crew and director look on. In this shift, which is also demarcated on the sound track, we are reminded of the layers of representation, both as a matter of aesthetic concern within the film's diegesis, and as a broader dramatic concern for the viewer of Assayas' film.
