Sound bridge and voice over narration in Woody Allen's Sleeper (1973)

by Brian Davis

In this sequence from Woody Allen's science fiction satire Sleeper (1973), keeping to the style of continuity editing, Allen uses a sound bridge and voice over narration to connect the scenes prior to as well as inside the Aires Project building. The plan to infiltrate the Aires Project building discussed in the voice over narration starkly contrasts with the actualization of the plan, which is anticipated in the long tracking shot that the sequence concludes with, wherein the sexual tension between the male and female characters is foregrounded.
