Elliptical editing in Broadway Danny Rose (1984)

by Brian Davis

In the opening sequence to Woody Allen's Broadway Danny Rose (1984), Allen uses a series of dissolves to connect several scenes, in which characters discuss their careers as comedians. In addition to the continuity that the dissolves provide, the opening sequence is also constructed in the style of elliptical editing, which culminates with the introduction of the lead character, Danny Rose.
