The Fire Nation has God on their Side

by Attackfish Scales

One of the long running themes of Avatar: the Last Airbender is that the Fire nation and its people as a whole are not inherently evil, that state sponsored propaganda that at once portrayed other nations as savage barbarians and themselves as spreading civilization to the world with their war of conquest meant that most Fire Nation citizens saw the war as noble. One of the main characters of the Show, Zuko, himself holds these vies until close to the end of the series, when a combination of factors opens his eyes to the brutal reality of his family's imperialism.

The Fire Nation's imperialist ideology which lines up so well with real world imperialist ideologies, ad the way this ideology leads to tremendous pain and suffering is a central theme of Avatar: the Last Airbender. The idea that people who believe they are doing right an perform monstrous acts is likewise a constant in the show.
