Katara and Sokka Belong

by Attackfish Scales

Although Avatar: the Last Airbender never shies away from portraying abuse within families, the series also never hesitates to show all of the ways in which family can be a positive, nurturing force. In sharp contrast to the Fire Nation royal family are Water Tribe siblings, Sokka and Katara.

Siblings are rarer in fiction than they are in real life, and most of the time, one sibling is much more central to the story than the other(s). Neither Sokka nor Katara however are dependent on the other for their presence in the story and both are equally as central to the plot. The narrative both allows them to be individuals, and develops them independently of each other, and also affirms their bond with each other, and their shared history.

In a show that heavily emphasizes the power of friendship and families of choice, It might seem strange that so much attention is paid to this loving sibling bond. But it is this very family bond that becomes the foundation for the creation of a new family. It is Katara and Sokka's love for each other and security and confidence in their relationship that enables them to extend the hand of family first to Aang, then Toph, and finally to Zuko and Suki.
