Playing with the White Lotus Now

by Attackfish Scales

In most children's shows, Adults are either absent or incompetent. Avatar: the Last Airbender chooses instead to have a wide range of powerful, effective adults who help support and teach its young leads, or who come into conflict with them as enemies. The mentors in Avatar the Last Airbender have been fighting the war with the Fire Nation since longer than the main characters have been alive, and in the finale, it is revealed that many of them belong to the same secret organization, the Order of the White Lotus.

The gathering of the Order of the White Lotus also highlights something about Avatar: the Last Airbender. There are no women to be found. There are old women in the Avatar world, some of whom are powerful enough for membership, such as Yugoda the healer, Aunt Wu, Hama the bloodbender, or Li and Lo, Azula's twin advisers. However, all are either evil, or otherwise deemed unworthy of admittance in the Order.

Fans like to joke that the Order of the White Lotus left Pakku, an Order member who has ridged ideas about gender roles, in charge of recruitment.
