Text Commentary

Literary Adaptation
by Clifford Galiher `

The BBC miniseries adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is 5 1/2 hours long, meaning that the filmmakers did not need to worry about condensing the plot and dialogue as much as feature filmmakers might. That said, there are still detectable differences between the passage in the novel and the scene as depicted onscreen.  The text from the novel comes from the beginning of Chapter 43, available at (http://tinyurl.com/ok9r7wq). How does director Simon Langton use images to depict Darcy's estate, Pemberley, and Elizabeth's reaction to it? How does this compare with the way Jane Austen uses words to convey the same things?
