Compression and expansion of time in Ayoade's "Submarine"

by JUAN PABLO SARMIENTO

Various devices are used in this clip to manipulate time and time perception. Ellipses compress the walk accross the bridge, camera movements extend the subjective sensation of time in orden to heighten expectation and suspense, and freeze frames are used in order to give us a caleidoscopic and subjective feeling of time. Such devices are common in contemporary films, especially in those aimed to younger audiences, more "literate" in video clip, fast and fancy film language.

This clip illustrates various devices that allow for expansion and compression of time. Ellipses, jump cuts, clips and camera movements accelerate and slow down the tempo in this segment of the film.
