Commentaries on this Media!

The mundane and the sublime

by JUAN PABLO SARMIENTO

Certain filmic conventions are associated with dispositions towards media. Hand-held, digital cameras usually are used to describe mundane situations. In this clip, however, the use of slow motion confers a sensation of "solemnity" and "poetry" to simple clips of kids skating. Calling our attention on the beauty of the quotidian has been a strategy common in indie filmmakers, and this art-house film is very much an exploration of the beauty in everyday suburban life (with a whodunnit to keep our interest).

Making the real more solemn: use of slow motion in documentary footage in Paranoid Park

In this clip, the alteration of time is used to grant the qualities of "poetic" and "solemn" to shots that would otherwise seem mundane.
