Who Plays God? (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
by Linda Ghent `

This segment focuses on the growth in technology used to save newborns with very low birth weights. The benefits and the costs are outlined. The viewer gets to see the very painful decisions that parents have to make in cases where the technology just isn't going to be enough.

The panel discuss the alternatives to spending resources on this technology and also the impact that the technology has on families and providers. In many ways, it appears that everyone becomes "trapped" by the technology and thus decisions concerning what to do and what treatment to follow may not be performed on a cost-benefit basis.
